Vines Cover the Wall

Showing her mother the garden beside Auschwitz, Hedwig acknowledges that Jewish prisoners are beyond the wall and explains that she planted additional vines to grow over and conceal it.

The attractive visible interface is deliberately separated from the system’s human cost. Concealment makes ordinary life easier for beneficiaries while leaving the underlying violence unchanged—a warning that observability and governance fail when powerful actors prefer not to see outcomes.

Hedwig is not innocently confused by an opaque system; she knows what the wall hides and chooses concealment. This is deliberate complicity and value failure, not accidental objective misspecification.
