Michał gives Szalas a second key to Szpilman’s locked hiding place and entrusts him with bringing food. Szalas makes increasingly infrequent visits and takes Szpilman’s watch, supposedly to buy supplies. Dorota and Michał later find Szpilman gravely ill with jaundice and explain that Szalas had solicited donations in Szpilman’s name while pocketing the money.

A safety-critical task is delegated to an intermediary with exclusive access, little verification, and a beneficiary who cannot report failure. The arrangement creates ideal conditions for insider abuse: the nominal caretaker can claim success upstream while extracting resources and hiding the real outcome.

This is deliberate human theft amid persecution and starvation, not a playful reward-hacking story. The analogy should remain narrowly about trusted intermediaries, monitoring gaps, and the need to verify outcomes from the vulnerable beneficiary’s perspective.
