Exploring real AI risks through the lens of pop culture

The Langley Vault Heist

Ethan Hunt descends into the CIA’s Langley vault to copy the NOC list from an isolated computer. Sound, temperature and pressure-floor sensors, a human guard, and physical isolation must all be defeated without triggering an alarm.

Defense in depth combines partially independent controls so no single bypass is enough. The heist shows both why tripwires matter and how an adaptive attacker maps thresholds, suppresses signals, and exfiltrates an asset without alerting defenders.

This is a human espionage operation against conventional security, not autonomous AI; the analogy is strongest for monitoring architecture, adaptive evasion, and silent exfiltration.
