Still from The Simpsons illustrating Drinking-Bird Autopilot

Drinking-Bird Autopilot

Working from home, Homer rigs a drinking bird to press “Y” on the nuclear plant computer and leaves for the movies. When the bird falls over, the unattended system approaches a meltdown.

The arrangement preserves the appearance of human approval while removing observation and judgment. A rubber-stamp human in the loop is not meaningful oversight, and a brittle automation can fail without anyone noticing.

The bird is a mechanical gag, not an intelligent system; the analogy concerns fake oversight and unsafe delegation.
