The Ceremony’s Single Metric

Gilead’s state-mandated Ceremony reorganizes law, family, religion, and women’s bodies around a single measurable outcome: conception. Serena restrains June while Fred attempts to impregnate her.

Once birthrate is treated as the overriding proxy for social flourishing, autonomy, dignity, consent, and family bonds become expendable. The metric improves by destroying much of what it was supposed to serve.

This is a regime deliberately imposing monstrous political values, so it is as much a governance and value-alignment case as an accidental Goodhart failure.
